Description

40-44 Bridge Street are mid-17th century cottages that were refronted in the late 19th century. They feature a combination of brick and timber-frame construction, topped with a steeply pitched Welsh slate roof that has a central gable. The cottages have a brick cross-axial ridge stack and a large rubble stack at the rear. The buildings are two storeys high with an attic and have a five-window range. The windows are irregularly spaced 2/2 sashes set under segmental arches made of ashlar and blue brick, with a similar window in the gable. There are five plain doors at irregular intervals, and a battened plank door to No. 45, along with four more 2/2 sashes and similar arches.

The right side of the building is roughcast over rubble and has two fixed lights above a 20th-century light in an altered opening. At the rear, Nos. 43 and 44 are made of rubble and have two 18th or 19th-century two-light casements above a plank door and another two-light casement. Nos. 40, 41, and 42 are roughcast with a brick stack and feature two 18th or 19th-century two-light casements, with a gable that has a steeper pitch on the left side.

Inside, the cottages retain exposed timber-framing, stop-chamfered ceiling frames, massive stop-chamfered posts, a plastered rubble stack, and a stone winder stair. This largely intact range of 17th-century cottages is somewhat obscured by the 19th-century front.
