Description
This is a range of outbuildings located about 40 to 70 yards north and north-east of Handmore Farmhouse. The outbuildings include two barns, a granary, a stable, and a shelter shed. The barns likely date from the late 17th century or 18th century and are constructed with a timber frame and weatherboards, featuring Welsh slate and corrugated iron roofs. They consist of about three bays aligned west-south-west to east-north-east, with wagon entries on the south side and raking-strut trusses.
The granary, attached to the east end of the eastern barn, is probably from the 18th century. It is made of sandstone rubble and brick, with a timber-framed upper storey that has brick infill and a corrugated iron roof. The granary has about four bays aligned roughly east to west, with a south elevation that features stone tallet stairs rising from the left to a ledged door. The ground floor has three single entries. Inside, the granary has curved principals supporting collars with pegged posts and raking struts.
The stable, attached to the east end of the granary, dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is built of sandstone rubble and weatherboarded timber-frame, with a corrugated iron roof. The stable likely has two or three bays, aligned west-north-west to east-south-east. The south elevation features a central loft opening with a ledged door, and the ground floor has two openings and an entry.
The shelter shed is attached to the east end of the stable and probably dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with later alterations. It is made of sandstone rubble and has a corrugated asbestos roof. The shelter shed has about ten bays aligned roughly north-west to south-east, with the south-west elevation featuring oak posts, low ledged doors, and low concrete walls. The interior includes raking struts and troughs. This entire complex forms a long crescent shape to the north-east of Handmore Farmhouse, which is not included in the listing.
