Description
Numbers 1-6 Almshouses at Staunton on Wye School were built in 1859-60 by Fulljames and Waller for the Jarvis Educational Foundation. They are constructed of red brick in English bond with stone dressings and feature clay plain tile roofs with stone coping on the gables. The design is in the Tudor Gothic style, with an H-plan layout and cross-wings at either end.
The exterior is a single storey with a symmetrical south front that has a 1:6:1 window arrangement. This includes two and three-light stone mullion windows with iron casements featuring horizontal glazing bars, along with a central doorway that has a three-centred arch and a plank door with side lights. The projecting gabled cross-wings have stone canted bay windows topped with hipped tile roofs. There is a plinth with chamfered stone weathering, lateral stacks, and similar doorways with side lights and stone mullion windows on the sides of the cross-wings. At the rear, there are 20th-century flat roof outshuts between the wings. The interior has not been inspected.
