Headstones in the Churchyard of the Church of St Giles, South of Church

A collection of 32 headstones, mainly in slate, dating from the 18th and early 19th centuries, located in the churchyard at Cropwell Bishop.

The headstones are recorded from east to west as follows:

1. Small rectangular headstone, very ornate, to William Felstead, died 1759. Signed by J. Sparrow.

2. Shaped, delicate headstone to John, son of John and Ann Briggs, died 1794. Signed by Wood, Bingham.

3. Rectangular, delicate headstone to Francis German and Ann his wife, died 1771 and 1790 respectively.

4. Small shaped, ornate headstone to John and Thomas, sons of Thomas and Ann German, died 1778 aged 17 years and 1782 aged 19 years. Signed by Brown.

5. Small shaped, delicate headstone to Thomas German, died 1781 aged 44 years.

6. Large shaped, classical headstone divided vertically, to Richard Smith, died 1802 and Ann, relict of Richard Smith, died 1806.

7. Rectangular headstone with moulded surround very finely cut, to George White, died 21st August 1720 in his 89th year.

8. Small rectangular, fairly plain headstone to George White, died 1777.

9. Tall rectangular, ornate headstone to Mary, wife of Robert German, died 1768.

10. Small rectangular headstone to Charles Bosworth, died 12th October 1728 aged 72 years.

11. Rectangular, classical headstone with relief carving, to Samuel White, Gent., who was for 30 years one of the High Constables of the hundred of Bingham, died 1813.

12. Shaped, classical headstone to Charles Bosworth, died 1772 in his 80th year.

13. Shaped classical headstone to Mary, wife of Robert Kirkman, died 1805, and also Isaac their son. Signed by Wood.

14. Small freestone headstone, part-obscured, dating from the early to mid 18th century.

15. Shaped headstone to Mary, wife of William Hemsley, died 1788.

16. Large shaped, classical headstone with relief in round panel, to Richard Mabbott and Mary his wife, died 1780 and 1795 respectively. Signed by Wood.

17. Small rectangular headstone with moulded edge and relief carving in corners and an oval panel, to Amy Mabbott, wife of William Mabbott, died 1735.

18. Tall shaped headstone to Robert Kirkman, died 1773. Signed by W. Barnes.

19. Very broad headstone divided vertically, to Robert Kirkman, died 1767 and Sarah, wife of Robert Kirkman, died 1761, and also William and Sarah their grandchildren who died in infancy.

20. Shaped headstone with relief winged cherubs head in roundel, to Elenor, wife of William Wilford, died 1778, and also William Wilford, died 1784.

21. Small shaped freestone headstone to Richard, dated early 18th century.

22. Rectangular classical headstone with delicate flowers, to Joseph Hemsley, died 1785.

23. Shaped delicate headstone to Elizabeth, relict of John Pilkington, died 1792 aged 75 years.

24. Shaped classical headstone to John Pilkington, died 1804 in his 55th year.

25. Broad shaped, classical, very fine headstone with roundel in head, to John Pilkington, died 1783.

26. Tall shaped headstone with relief in roundel in head, to Thomas Pilkington, who married Mildred the daughter of William and Martha Hubbard of Plumtree, died 1785.

27. Large shaped, classical headstone with urn in roundel in head, to Christopher Bell, died 1784. Signed by Brown.

28. Shaped classical headstone with relief trumpeting angel in roundel in head, to John Bell, died 1783.

29. Shaped classical headstone with relief winged cherubs head in roundel, to Mary, daughter of John and Ann Bell, died 1783 aged 19 years.
