Description

A group of slate headstones are located within the churchyard of St Luke’s Church, to the south of the church and west of the porch. Most date from the 18th century, with a few from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The headstones vary in size and shape. Number 1 is rectangular with a moulded, round-arched surround, inscribed to William, son of Ellis and Elizabeth Brown, who died in 1751. Headstone number 2 is a small, rectangular stone to Elizabeth, daughter of Ellis Brown, who died in 1768. Headstone 3 features a round-faced winged angel and commemorates William, son of Robert Barlow and Anne his wife, who died in 1709. Headstone 7 is broad, shaped with classical ornamentation, and divided vertically, to John and Elizabeth Homes, and is likely from the late 18th or early 19th century. Number 8 features a winged angel and commemorates John White jnr., who died in 1743, aged 19. The tall, shaped headstone number 9 is inscribed to William Holmes, son of John and Elizabeth Holmes, who died in 1808, aged 40 years, and is signed “Winfield”. Number 10 is small and includes a winged angel, to John Scampton, who died in 1755. Headstone 11 is tall and shaped, with classical decoration, to Alice, wife of William Hart and relict of John Scampton, who died in 1793.
