Description

A group of headstones located in the churchyard of the Church of St Luke, situated to the south of the church and east of the porch, dates from the early to mid 18th century and is primarily made of slate.

From left to right, the headstones are as follows:

  1. A limestone headstone shaped with a winged cherub and a raised tablet, featuring an illegible inscription from the early 18th century.
  2. A rectangular limestone headstone with a winged cherub and a cloth-draped tablet, also with an illegible inscription from the early 18th century.
  3. A rectangular limestone headstone with a winged cherub, a moulded surround, and a raised tablet dedicated to William Pemperton of Glentworth near Lincoln, who died in 1709.
  4. A very small headstone dedicated to Helen and Ann, daughters of Henry Page by Elizabeth his wife, who died on August 12th, 1701.
  5. A rectangular headstone with raised letters and two round-faced winged angels, dedicated to Peter Hemsley, who died in 1727.
  6. A rectangular headstone featuring two round-faced winged angels, dedicated to Isabel, wife of Peter Hemsley, who died in 1738.
  7. A rectangular headstone with a round-faced winged angel, dedicated to Elizabeth, daughter of Peter Hemsley by Isabel his wife, who died in 1725.
  8. A small rectangular headstone with a round-faced winged angel, dedicated to Ann, daughter of Thomas Hemsley, who died in 1744/5 at the age of 15 years.
  9. A rectangular headstone with a round-faced winged angel, dedicated to Thomas Hemsley, who died in 1747.
  10. A rectangular headstone featuring two round-faced winged angels and raised letters, dedicated to Anne, wife of Thomas Hemsley, who died in 1731.
  11. A large slab with a moulded surround and foliage decoration, dedicated to Bridget, wife of John Hemsley, who died in 1767.
  12. A plain headstone dedicated to Elizabeth, wife of Edward Hart, who died in 1735.
  13. A tapering headstone with two round-faced winged angels and raised letters, dedicated to William Hart, who died in 1730.
