Description

The Old Rectory is a detached house dated 1854, located on Rectory Road in Upper Broughton. It is constructed of red brick featuring blue brick diaper work and has a plain-tile roof with gables, half-hips, and sprocketted hips over projecting bays. The building is two storeys high and showcases Gothic Revival style architecture.

The design is an ordered but asymmetrical composition with approximately two main parallel ranges, various gabled, hipped, and half-hipped projecting bays, and several reducing, projecting chimney breasts. The entrance front slightly protrudes in the center under two gables. It features an ogee-headed ashlar open porch supported by colonnettes, complete with a hood mould and a darker brick relieving arch. The inner door is made of oak and has strap hinges.

On either side of the entrance, reducing brick buttresses support a first-floor three-light ashlar canted bay with a lead roof and traceried side lights. To the left of the door is an ashlar plaque with the ornamental legend "NON SIBI SOLI AD 1854," positioned between two narrow windows, with a three-light mullioned and transomed window above. To the right of the doorway is a broad projecting chimney breast. The right corner features a diagonally set two-storey square bay with cross windows that have ashlar dressings. The right return includes a three-light staircase window with two transoms, situated between the front and rear ranges.

The garden front displays a two-storey canted bay on the left and a slightly projecting ground-floor square bay with a mullioned and transomed window and a gable above. Between these bays is a narrow plate-traceried window, and at the right end is a parallel half-hipped projecting range. The interior has not been inspected.
