Description
Keeper's Lodge is a model estate cottage built around 1855 by T. C. Hine for T. B. T. Hildyard. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a patterned plain tile roof and a chamfered plinth. It has half-round brick eaves and pedimented gables, with two external side wall stacks. The cottage is two storeys high and has three unequal bays.
The windows are primarily chamfered mullioned casements. The east front includes a projecting central bay with a hipped canted bay window that has three casements. To the left of this bay is another casement window, and to the right, there is a hipped porch with a brick base and turned wood balusters. Above the porch, there is a 20th-century casement window and a glazed quatrefoil to the right.
On the south side, there is a brick wall leading to the back yard on the left, and to the right, there is a timber mullioned casement on each floor. The north side features a central mullioned casement, and to the right, there is a set-back rear lean-to with a close boarded door, and above it, a casement window to the left.
This design won first prize in a competition held in 1848 by The Society for Improving the Condition of the Labouring Classes, which was presided over by Prince Albert.
