Description
Tree Lodge is a model estate cottage built around 1855 by T. C. Hine for T. B. T. Hildyard. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a patterned plain tile roof. It has a chamfered plinth, half-round brick eaves, and pedimented gables, with two external side wall stacks. The cottage is two storeys high and has a T-plan layout with three unequal bays.
The northeast front includes a central projecting gabled bay with a hipped canted bay window. To the left is a casement window, and to the right is a hipped porch with a brick base and turned wood balustrade, above which is another casement and a glazed quatrefoil. The northwest front features a three-light casement to the right and a single bay rear addition, altered in the mid-20th century, with a casement. Above this is another casement. The rear lean-to has a central door and flat-roofed single-storey late 20th-century additions on each side.
This model estate cottage won first prize in a competition held in 1848 by The Society for Improving the Condition of the Labouring Classes, which was presided over by Prince Albert.
