Description
The Grantham Canal milepost, located approximately 500 metres north of the New Canal Farm, dates from the late 18th century. This cast-iron post features a rounded top and a moulded edge. It has raised letters that read: "14¾ MILES FROM THE TRENT," with the figure 14¾ displayed on a riveted-on plate. The canal was authorized in 1793, and this section was constructed by James Green, a surveyor employed by Lord Middleton of Wollaton Hall.
