Description
The Gatehouse and Gatehouse Cottage, built around 1830 for John Emerton Wescomb, are notable structures located on the north side of Church Lane in Thrumpton. The gatehouse is constructed of red brick with some blue brick accents and features two embattled and panelled octagonal turrets that are corbelled out at the top. These turrets are set on moulded plinths and consist of two stages with decorative bands. Between the turrets, an embattled parapet extends over a Tudor arched gateway, which has a hood mould that rises to accommodate a carved shield. Above and beneath the embattlements, there is a single three-light ashlar mullion casement, flanked by single flush blue brick lozenge panels.
To the right of the gatehouse is a red brick wall with ashlar coping that extends approximately four metres, terminating at Elm Cottage, which is listed separately. On the left side of the gatehouse is the single-storey, single-bay cottage, featuring a plain tile roof that is hipped to the left, a single ridge red brick stack, and an embattled parapet with a band extending underneath. The cottage is set on a plinth and includes a single four-light ashlar mullion casement.
