Description
The Church of St Denis is a parish church built in 1756, constructed from red brick and ashlar with a slate roof. It features an ashlar modillion cornice that creates a pediment at the east end and a partial pediment at the west end, all set on a plinth. The church includes a tower, nave, and chancel under a single roof, along with a small apse and a north vestry. The embattled tower has four stages and is adorned with an ashlar band running beneath it, with single recessed panels at each corner extending the height of the tower.
The west wall features an arched doorway leading to a double arched and glazed door, which is accessed by two steps. Above this is a rectangular recessed panel and an oeil de boeuf window with a glazing bar casement. The south side mirrors the west wall, but the doorway and window are blind. The north side is similar to the south, though a single-storey 19th-century lean-to vestry with an arched window in the west wall obscures the doorway. The bell chamber contains four arched openings, while the north wall has three arched openings, each fitted with late 19th-century windows that have two arched lights topped by a single circular light.
The apse features an ashlar cornice band and segmental side walls, with a single recessed arched panel in the east wall. Above the impost bands is a light with an ashlar sill band, and the area below the panel is blind. The south wall corresponds to the north wall. Inside, the west porch, which is located within the tower, has doorways leading to the vestry and nave, and contains 20th-century furniture along with an 18th-century dentil cornice.
