Description

The Church of St Paul is a church built in 1745, with the exception of the tower, which was rebuilt in 1868. It is constructed of slate rubble with ashlar dressings and features a nave, chancel with a north vestry, and a west tower. The tower has a rectangular plan and diagonal buttresses, with a west entrance that includes a pointed arch and a gable. Above this entrance is a lancet window with a drip moulding. The bell stage of the tower has straight-headed louvred openings with three pointed lights and is topped with an embattled parapet.

The nave consists of five bays and has weathered buttresses, with straight-headed windows featuring two cusped ogee-headed lights. The two-bay chancel has a three-light east window with Geometrical tracery, while the south side has straight-headed windows with two cusped lights and single-chamfered mullions. The eastern bay of the chancel has a segmental arched recess above a tomb from 1844. The north side features a gabled vestry with a Y-tracery window.

Inside, the roof is supported by simple hammer-beam trusses with braced collars. The chancel arch is double-chamfered, with the inner part corbelled. There is an octagonal pulpit adorned with tracery panels and a reredos featuring ornamental brattishing. The east window includes a painted text around the arch, with flanking painted commandments, the Lord's Prayer, and the Creed. The church also contains good late 19th-century stained glass, with the east window possibly created by Hardman. The porch in the tower features a timber vault.
