Description

13-17 Carter Gate is a three-storey terrace building of early 19th-century date, constructed in exposed red and charcoal brick laid in Flemish bond. The building was originally residential but was converted to retail use across the ground floor during the 20th century, with partial return to residential use above during the 21st century.

The principal elevation faces Carter Gate across eight bays. Number 13 comprises two bays with the southernmost top-right window filled in and is finished with cream paintwork on its brickwork and window dressings. The ground floor is occupied by 20th-century timber-clad shopfronts with central doors to numbers 13 and 15, and a right-hand door to number 17. An off-centre elliptical carriage arch of cream-coloured stone with alternating bands of cream stone and brick on the northern side and plain brick on the southern side sits between numbers 15 and 17, providing access to a rear parking area connected to Balderton Gate. Close-boarded carriage doors beneath the arch are painted black. A single wooden door to the north of number 17, accessed via two stone steps, provides access to residential flats above numbers 15 and 17, whilst the first and second floors above number 13 are connected to the retail space below.

A three-brick stringcourse runs across the entire elevation between the first and second floors, with evidence of a similar course between ground and first floors now concealed behind shopfronts except above the carriage arch. The first and second floors display timber-framed sash windows of varying configurations. Above number 13 are six-over-six sash windows at first-floor level, one deeply recessed beside a 19th-century six-over-six sash, and a three-over-six sash on the second floor beside a blind window. Above number 15 are six-over-three sash windows at first-floor, with their lower portions partially filled in to accommodate a larger shopfront architrave, and three-over-six sash windows at second-floor level. Above number 17 are six-over-one sash windows at first floor and three-over-six sash windows on the second floor. The fenestration above the off-centre carriage arch achieves symmetry through offsetting brickwork, with the southernmost window bay of number 15 and northernmost window bay of number 17 forming a symmetrical arrangement. All window frames are timber.

To the rear, the building is formed of exposed red brick. The roof is a slate tile roof with four brick chimney stacks. The rear elevation displays irregular first-floor windows, predominantly 20th-century single-pane casement windows, with the exception of a single six-over-six sash window on the second floor. Windows have been filled in with recent brickwork and glass bricks in places.

A catslide roof extends from number 13, retaining six-over-six sash windows on its southern elevation and using the same slate tile roof, with evidence of 20th-century blockage of windows with brickwork and glass bricks. A single-storey extension in 20th-century brickwork abuts this catslide. A two-storey gable extension extends from number 17, built in 20th-century brickwork with a pitched concrete tile roof and single-pane casement windows at first and second floors. A further single-storey building in exposed red brick sits behind number 15, infilling what would likely once have been a courtyard. Its windows are now filled in with timber panels beneath flat arches, and it is topped by a moulded cornice and pitched slate tile roof.
