Description

This is a row of four mill workers' cottages, originally five, located on School Lane and dating from the late 18th century. The cottages are built from dressed coursed rubble. Numbers 1, 2, and 3/4 feature flush ashlar quoins and a hipped pantile roof, which has two gable stacks and one ridge stack that are rendered. The row is two and a half storeys high and consists of nine bays. From right to left, the ground floor includes a single glazing bar sash, a larger glazing bar sash, a doorway with a panelled part-glazed door, two glazing bar sashes, another doorway with a panelled part-glazed door, two more glazing bar sashes (the right one is in a former doorway), and a final single glazing bar sash. The upper floor has six glazing bar sashes and six smaller glazing bar sashes on the top floor. All ground and first-floor openings feature flush splayed lintels, and the wooden sash windows vary slightly in size.

To the left, No. 5 has a pantile roof and a single rendered stack on the left gable. It is two storeys tall and consists of two bays, with a doorway that has a wooden door and a two-pane overlight, alongside a single glazing bar sash. Both openings have flush splayed lintels, and above is a similar single sash window. At the rear, there are single-storey extensions made of dressed coursed rubble and slate.
