Description
The Shireoaks War Memorial is a war memorial that was unveiled in 1920, designed by C E Kempe and Co of London. It features a wooden Calvary with a bronze figure of Christ, which is set on an octagonal stone plinth adorned with bronze plaques. This plinth stands on a wider octagonal stone base that has carved quatrefoil decoration on each panel. The bronze panels, added in 1995 to replace earlier carved inscriptions, bear the following words: "REMEMBER YE WITH THANKSGIVING AND HONOUR THESE MEN OF SHIREOAKS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR OF 1914-1918 AND WORLD WAR II OF 1939-1945, UPON THOSE SOULS MAY GOD HAVE MERCY/ 1914-1918" (listing 24 names) and "1939-1945" (listing 12 names). The memorial is surrounded by a flagged area.
