Description
The Turnerwood Flight of Locks is a flight of canal locks located between Turnerwood Bridge and Turnerwood Lock at Cinder Hill. Built in the late 18th century, with some alterations, these locks were constructed for the Chesterfield Canal Company. They are made of rubble and ashlar limestone with brick linings. There are six single locks, each 2.1 meters wide. The locks generally feature stone entry and exit walls, with brick linings inside the locks, and some have visible ashlar courses near the low water line. The ashlar lock-gate recesses, where the gates have been removed, include hollow-quoined heel-post housings, although the stone edgings have been removed. While these locks are in poorer condition than the Thorpe Flight of locks to the west of Turnerwood Bridge, they still contribute to the sequence of structures along an unspoilt section of the waterway in the parishes of Thorpe Salvin and North and South Anston. The canal was surveyed by James Brindley and constructed between 1771 and 1777 under the supervision of John Varley and Hugh Henshall, linking Chesterfield with Stockwith to provide access to the eastern waterways. The names and numbers of the locks are detailed in the 1981 booklet by The Chesterfield Canal Preservation Society.
