Description
The canal milestone, located immediately to the west of Milestone Lock on the Chesterfield Canal, dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. It was created for the Chesterfield Canal Company and is made of dressed limestone. The milestone features a thick, round-headed slab with the number '17' inscribed on the side facing the canal, indicating the distance to Chesterfield. This milestone may be original to the canal scheme, which was surveyed by James Brindley and constructed between 1771 and 1777.
