Description
The gatehouse to Thorpe Salvin Hall is a structure from the mid to late 16th century, built for Hercy Sandford, who died in 1582. It is constructed from rubble limestone and features a tile roof. The building has two storeys and is designed in the Tudor domestic style, characterized by large quoins.
The central doorway includes an old oak door with a smaller inset door, framed by moulded quoins and a Tudor-arched lintel beneath a hoodmould. Below an unglazed three-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window with a hoodmould, there is a heraldic panel. Above this, three carved panels display a crested helm and a weathered inscription. The gatehouse is topped with a crow-stepped gable featuring roll-moulded copings.
On the left side, there is a doorway on the first floor. The interior retains its original floor structure, while the upper floor has brick and pantile nesting holes. The heraldic panels suggest that the gatehouse was constructed between 1565 and 1582. It is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
