Description
The Dog Kennels Bridge is a canal bridge located partly in the parishes of Harthill with Woodall, North and South Anston, and Wales. It is dated either 1811 or 1841, though this is unclear, and has been altered. The bridge was built for the Chesterfield Canal Company and is constructed from coursed, squared rubble limestone with a brick soffit. It features a single span that carries a road over the canal at the point where the towpath turns. The bridge has chamfered jambs and projecting springing stones leading to a chamfered, ashlar segmental arch, with a keystone that has a dated ledge above it.
The abutment walls curve to form ramped retaining walls for footpaths that connect the road to the towpath. The north-east wall returns at a right angle, while the north-west wall ends in a rebuilt pier. The upper part of the east parapet has been rebuilt in blue brick, similar to much of the west parapet, and both parapets feature rounded stone copings. There is also 20th-century trunking attached to the east side of the bridge. The bridge spans the Chesterfield Canal, which was surveyed by James Brindley and constructed between 1771 and 1777. The datestone likely refers to an alteration of the arch, in line with other bridges along the canal, which are primarily made of brick and date to around 1840.
