Description
Bridge 35 and the Top Treble Lock, located to the west of Low Spring Wood, are part of the Chesterfield Canal and date from the late 18th century, with the bridge itself dated 1835. Constructed for the Chesterfield Canal Company, the bridge is made of red brick featuring ashlar voussoirs in the arch and ashlar housings for the lock gates. It is a single-span bridge situated at the east end of a three-lock staircase. The bridge includes chamfered ashlar jambs and projecting springing stones that support a chamfered segmental arch, with a prominent keystone above that bears the date. The southern wing walls curve outward and end in projecting piers, while the northern approach ramp is made of rubble stone on the east side. Some brickwork in the parapet has been renewed, and some stone copings have been replaced with concrete.
The locks feature rubble stone walls at the entry and exit, with the locks themselves lined in brick and missing their original stone edgings. The ashlar recesses for the lock gates include hollow-quoined heel-post housings and arched tunnels on the south side that lead to an overflow channel. This structure is a significant part of the Chesterfield Canal, which was surveyed by James Brindley and constructed between 1771 and 1777, although it has undergone improvements and renewals in the 19th century. It marks the western end of the Thorpe Flight of locks.
