Description

A group of cottages, now three dwellings, was built in the early and mid-18th century, possibly incorporating earlier fabric. The construction is deeply-coursed limestone with a pantile roof. The cottages are two storeys high, with a five-bay arrangement to the first floor of the original section. The older part of the cottages features prominent quoins. A doorway on the right has a chamfered ashlar surround and lintel inscribed "MAN TO MAN IS GROWNE SOE UNJUST HE IS A WISEMAN THAT KNOWS WHOE TO TRUST," with an exterior light fixture above a weathered naturalistic carving. There are three-light windows in double-chamfered surrounds without mullions, both flanking the doorway and above. A later doorway on the left has a raised ashlar surround with a keystone. Two square windows to the left are fitted with 20th-century casements in raised ashlar surrounds, with similar windows above the door, and a narrower, blocked window above the door.

The addition to the right is set back and features three-light windows to each floor, with projecting sills and plain lintels. Brick end stacks and two ridge stacks flank the bay with the carved lintel. The left return has a blocked doorway with a bead-moulded ashlar surround and shaped lintel, and two blocked windows on the right with square-faced surrounds. Evidence suggests a timber wall post sits behind the front-right quoins, and two straight joints in the front wall suggest the building originated as a two-bay timber-framed house, clad in limestone in the early 18th century and later extended. The inscribed lintel may be a reused piece from Thorpe Salvin Old Hall.
