Description

The monument to Lord George Bentinck, located 30 metres north of Bentinck Lodge, was constructed in 1912 and is made of ashlar and lead. It features a square ashlar column set within a semi-circular paved area that has regular striae. The column stands on a plinth with a lead tablet on the front, which is adorned with a sculptured head at the top and a lion's head at the base that directs water into a trough below. The tablet commemorates Lord George Bentinck, Member of Parliament for Kings Lynn, who died suddenly near this location on 21st September 1848 at the age of 47. It states that the monument was erected by his kinsman, William Arthur, the Sixth Duke of Portland, in 1912, and includes a tribute from Disraeli highlighting Bentinck's leadership qualities and dedication to duty. Above the lead tablet is an ashlar shield displaying a coat of arms. On either side of the column are raised ashlar plaques inscribed with the words "truth" on the left and "courage" on the right. The column is topped with a decorated ashlar urn. At the base, there is a single stone trough on the left and a single stone step on the right, with curved ashlar walls on either side, each capped with shaped ashlar coping.
