Description
The crane at Canal Wharf at Retford Basin is an early 20th-century structure located on the south side of the Chesterfield Canal. It features a cast iron base and a wooden loading arm. The arm is raised using a wire rope and pulley wheel, which is operated by hand through two enclosed cog wheels connected to a rotating drum. It includes a lever-operated brake for safety. The arm displays a cast iron plaque with the warning 'NOT TO LIFT MORE THAN 2 TONS' in raised letters. This crane is situated at a wharf that is part of the Chesterfield Canal, which was constructed between 1771 and 1777.
