Description
King Edward VI Grammar School, originally built in 1855, features Tudor style architecture and is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings. The building has one and two storeys and is topped with a Welsh slate roof that has a ridge tile.
On the right side, there is a one-storey section with four large mullion and transom windows, each containing six lights, with the upper lights arched and separated by buttresses. The two-storey section to the right has two gables, each with a bay window, one of which is canted.
To the left, there is a tower that includes a dripmould, royal arms, and the date 1855 inscribed in the spandrels of a moulded arched entry. Above this entry, a six-light mullion and transom window sits below a stone octagonal tower adorned with a shield ornament, featuring eight openings, gargoyles at the cornice, and a crenellated parapet. The spire is covered with fish-scale slates and topped with a finial.
To the left of the tower, there is a one-storey gabled section that is part of the two-storey front. The King Edward VI Grammar School and the wall on the southwest side form a cohesive group.
