Description

The Majestic Cinema, built around 1925 for Cyril Getcliffe, is a striking example of cinema architecture. It features a red brick structure with Portland stone dressings and slate roofs. The south front showcases the main entrance on the left, highlighted by a large ashlar opening with a moulded surround and five steps leading up to pairs of double doors adorned with Art Deco style glazing patterns. Above the entrance is a large round-headed brick arch flanked by two brick mullions, each decorated with recessed reliefs of theatrical masks. Below, three lower windows display similar Art Deco style glazing, while above them are three narrow lancets with matching glazing, all set within square brick stepped panels featuring patterned brickwork.

To the right, a three-storey staircase section includes two doorways and a small fixed light, with four staggered staircase windows above, followed by a pair of small windows and a triple window, all showcasing Art Deco style glazing. Further to the right is a two-storey section topped with an overhanging Mansard roof, which contains two doorways and a small window, with three three-light casements above. Beyond this is a fly tower featuring a large scenery doorway on the ground floor and a tall projecting signboard above.

Inside, the cinema retains much of its original fixtures and fittings, along with most of its decorative detailing. The foyer includes original panelling, doors, plaster ceiling, and staircase. The small lower cinema has some original detailing, while the main auditorium features a gallery, boxes, and a proscenium arch that are virtually unchanged. The fine plaster ceiling is supported by elaborately painted mermaids. This cinema was designed to host both moving picture shows and music hall acts, which is reflected in the elaborate backstage theatrical accommodations.
