Description
A threshing barn and attached farm buildings dating from around 1780, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The buildings were constructed for Jonathon Acklom. They are built of red brick with hipped pantile roofs. The eaves have dentil detailing. The north-west front of the barn has two very large segment arched openings with straight wooden lintels, both now partially bricked up; the one to the right has a lower double plank door, while the one to the left has a plank door and a loft doorway above. To the left is a lower segment arched opening with a later sliding door, above which is a small shuttered opening and a loft door to the right. Single-storey wings flank the barn, each with a large plank door and a single shuttered opening. The south-east front features two rows of paired air vents and a large segment arched opening that has been blocked with brick and breeze blocks. Further to the right is another segment arched opening, now obscured by later 19th-century additions. A north-east L-shaped single-storey range, originally containing stables, animal houses, and cart sheds, is also obscured by this late 19th-century infill, but retains all its original openings. The interior roof structure was largely renewed in the late 19th century. The barn and farm buildings were constructed at a significant point in the development of agriculture, by a notable landlord who had recently enclosed the surrounding farmland and brought it under a single tenant.
