Description
Mattersey Hall is a college that was formerly a house, built in the early 18th century with later additions in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a red brick exterior and a hipped slate roof, which is topped with three red brick stacks and a stucco and painted cornice. The building has three bays and two storeys, with a central bay that slightly projects and rises to three storeys. The right bay is slightly taller than the left, and there is a 19th-century extension.
The structure is set on a plinth and includes a stucco and painted band at the first floor, as well as a first-floor sill band. The central bay has a similar floor band, and the right bay features a ground floor sill band. The central doorway is adorned with a panelled door and a traceried overlight, framed by a fluted and reeded architrave with patera in the top corners and a rusticated painted stucco surround. The porch is pedimented and supported by Roman Doric columns, featuring a triglyph entablature and a dentil-decorated pediment.
To the left of the doorway is a single sash window, while the right side has a casement window. On the upper floor, there are two sash windows and a casement to the right. A casement window is located in the top floor of the central bay. At the rear, there are extensive 19th and 20th-century extensions. Inside, the hall boasts an early 18th-century open well staircase, which features two carved balusters per tread and carved tread ends.
