Description
Fonaby House, formerly known as Fonaby Farmhouse, is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with significant additions from the 18th century and alterations from the 19th century. The building is constructed of brick that was previously colourwashed, featuring stucco keystones, and has a pantiled roof with stone-coped gables and small brick kneelers, along with two brick stacks. A rear wing made of ironstone rubble also has a pantiled roof. The house has a T-plan layout and is two storeys tall with a garret, presenting a five-bay front. The first floor has a brick band, and the central bay projects to full height. The entrance features a central six-panelled door with a four-paned overlight and a segmental painted brick head, flanked by two cross-mullion timber casement windows. Above, there are five similar windows, all with segmental heads and projecting stucco keystones. The gable end displays a brick band at the eaves level. Inside, there is a late 18th-century fireplace made of grey marble. The staircase features turned balusters with a closed string, and the rear 17th-century wing retains some timber girders and an 18th-century clasped purlin roof.
