Former RAF Faldingworth atomic bomb store: BD Fissile Core Storage Building

The Former RAF Faldingworth atomic bomb store, specifically the BD Fissile Core Storage Building, is a Type B nuclear fissile core storage hutch built in the early 1950s according to designs by the Air Ministry.

This small, single-storey structure has reinforced concrete walls resting on a brick plinth, topped with an asphalt-covered flat roof. The hutch has a rectangular plan, measuring approximately 3 metres by 2.5 metres. The east elevation features a single leaf metal-plated door, which is accessed via a low concrete ramp.

Internally, the walls are rendered with gritless plaster, and there are four small ventilators located on the sides and rear. The wooden doors are protected externally by a steel sheet and secured with a combination lock and an internal vertical locking bar operated by an external handle. The storage area originally contained two key-hole shaped holes in the ground for the cores, which have since been filled with concrete but remain discernible. Additionally, there is a radiator against the rear wall, and while electrical fittings are still present, including an automatic door lock that allowed remote operation, they are no longer functional.
