Description
The former RAF Faldingworth atomic bomb store is a designated type DD bomb storage building from the early 1950s, designed by the Air Ministry.
The structure features a reinforced concrete frame with breeze-block panel infill, and its doors are made of strengthened sheet metal. It has a long rectangular plan, measuring 58 metres in length and 18 metres in width, and is oriented north-south. The building is surrounded by earthen bunding, which is faced with a concrete retaining wall towards the road.
The main section of the building has a flat roof and extends from the loop road. The exposed frame stands proud of the breeze-block panels. At the front, there are two taller projecting sections that house rooms for ventilation equipment and other plant. A large ventilation pipe is shown in plans to extend from these sections along the roof. In front of the main block is a large gantry, which is higher than the rest of the building and supported by tall concrete columns. The gantry roof consists of reinforced concrete members supported by three larger profile concrete beams, which are integrated with a principal cross-beam that also carries the metal hoist track, though the hoist itself is no longer present. Concrete retaining walls on either side of the bay support the surrounding earth bunding.
Inside, the storage bay is a single large space divided into eleven bays long and three bays wide by a series of supporting columns. The central bay is narrower than the outer ones, and the space is defined by large supporting beams that carry the roof and align with the columns. The interior is finished with painted render.
