Description
23A South Street is a Grade II listed building, originally a house, dating from the early 18th century with some 19th-century alterations. The structure is made of painted brick with ashlar dressings and features a concrete interlocking tiled roof, topped with two brick gable stacks.
The front of the building has three bays and is two storeys high, with cellars and attics. It includes a plinth, a first-floor band, and a dogtooth eaves course. The entrance is an off-centre, panelled 19th-century door with a plain overlight, panelled reveals, and a wooden doorcase with a narrow hood, accessed by two steps. To the right of the door is a plain 19th-century sash window, and further along is an 18th-century basket carriage arch leading to the rear.
On the first floor, there are three early 18th-century glazing bar sashes featuring thick glazing bars, all of which have segmental brick heads. Above, there are two 19th-century dormers; one contains a Yorkshire sash window and the other an casement window, both with lead roofs and cheeks. Inside, the building retains some original panelled doors on the first floor and showcases a fine early 18th-century staircase, which is a dog leg design spanning two storeys, featuring a closed string and turned balusters.
