Description
No. 4 Spring Lane is a cottage that was formerly the schoolmaster's house, dating from the early 18th century. It was altered around 1824 when it was converted for use as accommodation for the schoolmaster, with further changes made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with small quoins and features a concrete tiled roof, a single red brick gable stack, and a side extension with a pent roof made of red brick.
The cottage is two stories high and has a three-bay front. The central feature is an early 19th-century closed porch with a parapet, which includes a semi-circular arched doorway and a half-glazed door. To the left of the porch is a two-light French window, and to the right is a three-light plain casement, both of which have segmental stone heads. On the first floor, there are three two-light casements under timber lintels.
At the rear, there is a single-storey range with a catslide roof that has 20th-century windows and incorporates two medieval human head stops into its structure. Inside, the cottage retains two simply chamfered beams. This building is included in the register for its group value.
