Description
This row of cottages, originally seven but now five, dates back to the late 17th century and was altered in the late 18th century to form part of St. Martins Workhouse. Constructed from coursed limestone rubble, the cottages feature a roof made of Collyweston slate and concrete tiles, with a single red brick gable stack and three large stone ridge stacks.
The building is two stories high and has a 13-bay front, which includes a blocked doorway and signs of earlier openings. There are five planked doors and eight two-light casements on the ground floor, while the first floor has six two-light casements and one five-light casement, all arranged in pairs near the eaves. Each opening is topped with timber lintels. The roof structure consists of oak staggered butt purlins, and the lack of structural divisions between the cottages indicates that they were converted from a barn in the late 18th century.
