Description
Albert Bridge is a pedestrian bridge over the River Welland, built in 1881 by Stamford Town Council to replace a bridge that was destroyed by a flood in July 1880. The bridge is constructed from coursed rubble stone and iron.
On either bank, the stone piers are adorned with a bold ashlar plinth and corner columns that support a stiff-leaf frieze topped with arched caps. The lower walls end in square lower piers that feature shallow pyramidal caps.
The bridge itself is supported by shallow curved iron girder arches, which are linked together at the center by another arch that spans the bridge deck and is topped with a gas lantern. The bridge has an iron lattice balustrade that is decorated with iron heart-shaped panels.
On the south-western pier, there is an iron plaque that reads, "THIS BRIDGE WAS ERECTED IN THE SECOND YEAR OF THE MAYORALTY OF JOHN PARADISE ESQ. 1881 IN PLACE OF ONE TOTALLY DESTROYED BY FLOOD IN JULY, 1880."
