Description

Middlefield House is a house dating from 1678, with alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of roughly-coursed ironstone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, and has a slate roof with stone and brick ridge stacks. The front of the house is irregular, featuring six bays and two storeys plus a cellar.

An off-centre entrance door is set within a moulded 17th-century surround with a cornice. To the left of the door is a single three-light, and two four-light cavetto mullioned window. To the right is a small single 17th-century light in a moulded surround, followed by a 20th-century three-light glazed door also with a 17th-century cornice. On the first floor are five three-light mullioned windows, all in moulded surrounds, and each with a moulded cornice. In the gable wall facing the street are single three-light mullioned windows on both storeys; the upper window sits on a flush sill band. Above this upper window is a plaque inscribed “MTM 1678”.

The interior contains stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. In the hall chamber on the upper floor, there is a fine beam with a date plaque set within a cable-moulded surround, also dated 1678.
