Description

This building consists of six almshouses, constructed in 1877 by Edward Browning of Stamford. They are made from squared limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings, and topped with a Collyweston slate roof and ashlar ridge stacks. The layout is a courtyard plan, with a single storey and a five-bay front. The end bays are slightly advanced and have their own gables.

In the center, there is a pair of plank and muntin doors set in a slightly advanced bay, which is covered by a hipped porch supported by turned wooden baluster supports. Above the porch, there is a small two-light dormer window. On either side of the central entrance, there are single three-light plain sash windows with chamfered stone mullions and plain ashlar surrounds. The gable ends also feature similar single windows. The left gable has a plaque with "MAS" in raised lettering, while the right gable displays the date "1877". Both plaques are adorned with draped garlands above them.

On the inner side fronts, there are matching pairs of plank and muntin doors beneath a projecting sloping roof on baluster supports. One side has a single three-light window, while the other side has a pair of three-light windows and a single light window. These almshouses were established following a bequest by Miss Mary Ann Scotney for six Protestant widows or spinsters.
