Description

A row of four former almshouses, now cottages, was built in 1869. They are constructed of red brick with yellow brick and ashlar dressings, and coursed ironstone rubble sides. The roof is slate, with two large square ridge stacks featuring yellow brick quoins.

The two-storey, five-bay front has a coped plinth and a yellow brick band. The central bay is slightly projected, with ashlar quoins and a raised stone coped gable topped with a finial. A central half-glazed door is recessed behind a semi-circular opening with a keyed ashlar surround. This is flanked by pairs of sash windows with glazing bars. Five similar sash windows are on the first floor; some have segmental yellow brick arched heads, while others are flush with the eaves. A recessed square panel in the central gable displays a shield bearing the Welby Arms, and a stone bearing the date 1869 is located on the right-hand gable.
