Description

Sundial Cottage is a house dating to 1804, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and further additions and alterations in the mid-20th century. The construction is of brick with ashlar dressings and a hipped slate roof, featuring a central coped ridge stack and deep wooden eaves. The two-storey, three-window front is symmetrical and includes a central two-storey canted bay window with three 3-light stone mullioned windows featuring diamond pane glazing. Recessed panels are situated beneath the windows of the bay, with a sundial in the central panel. A Tudor arched doorway with a half-glazed door is centrally positioned, flanked by Tudor arched openings, one glazed and one partly blocked, all beneath a common cornice. Either side of the front, on each floor, are 2-light stone mullioned windows with diamond pane glazing; the ground floor windows are larger. The left return features a 2-light stone mullioned window, and below it, a similar, larger 3-light window. On the right return are similar windows with wooden Gothick glazing bars. The building is one of a group constructed or altered around 1790-1820 by George de Ligne Gregory, Lord of the Manor of Harlaxton. It has stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
