Description
Ye Olde Bertie Arms is a public house dating back to 1681, with an 18th-century extension and a 20th-century alteration. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins. The building has thatched roofs, one of which is hipped, and features two brick ridge stacks and a single ashlar gable stack with a moulded cornice and the initials "SM" and the date 1681 carved in low relief. The layout is now T-shaped, incorporating a later projecting wing. The main front has a single storey and attic, with three bays. A 20th-century central doorway is flanked to the left by a two-light window and to the right by a three-light window with glazing bars. Two two-light windows with glazing bars are set within the thatched roof, under small thatched eyebrows. To the right of the main front is a lower single-bay section with a two-light window with glazing bars. Further to the right is a lower range with three blocked openings, consisting of a doorway flanked by windows. The projecting wing has a three-light casement window in its gable and a door flanked by single two-light windows on its side. The interior features an angled fireplace and chamfered main beams, including stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
