Description
The Public Library, located at 1671 High Street, is an early 18th-century building constructed in ashlar and featuring a single storey. It has a portico supported by four Tuscan columns, which were originally open between the columns. The building is topped with a very wide wooden modillion eaves cornice and a moulded pediment that crowns the entire frontage. It is situated on the site of the former Shambles and a market. The library, along with Nos 14 to 31 (consecutive), forms a cohesive group.
