Description
27 Fenkle Street is an early 19th-century building, possibly a former subscription library from around 1834. It has three storeys and five windows, featuring an elaborate ashlar front. The façade is accentuated by giant pilasters on the ground floor that frame the slightly projecting end bays. There is an entablature and a large balustraded parapet above. The windows are glazing bar sash types with moulded architraves; the end bays on the first floor have pediments, while the middle three windows are topped with flat pediments that have brackets supporting the central window. The ground floor is channelled ashlar, with two Greek Doric columns in antis flanking the central doorway, which has steps leading up to a six-panel door topped with a rectangular light containing glazing bars. The left bay features recessed windows with scrolls on the quarter pilasters, while the right bay has a semi-circular archway with voussoirs and a prominent key. Inside, at least two rooms have heavy ceiling cornices.
