Description
The Parish Church of St Mary and St Nicholas was built as the parish church by Prior William de Littleport around 1284, on the site of a Norman chapel, of which some remains still exist. The church is fundamentally cruciform in shape and features additions from the 14th and 15th centuries. The north chapel was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott during a general restoration from 1865 to 1867. The church has a Perpendicular hammerbeam roof, which includes angels and was restored by Scott. The west doorway leading into the tower dates from 1688. The chancel ceiling was created by Stephen Dykes-Bower, and the screen was designed by J Oldrid Scott in 1875. The church, along with the wall and gateway to the parish church and Beech House, forms a group.
