Description
The Town Hall, also known as the Sessions House, is a Grade II* listed building located on the west side of Market Place. It was designed in 1831 by local architect H E Kendall and showcases Gothic architectural style. The building stands two storeys tall and is constructed from ashlar stone. The first floor features five windows with four lights, each with mullion and transom, and decorated with quatrefoils, all set beneath arched dripmoulds. The right-hand corner has a rectangular dripmould and a slightly different window design.
The ground floor is arcaded, consisting of six 4-centred arches facing the Market Place, complete with moulded labels and an embattled string course. Full-height buttresses are positioned at the corners and between the end bays and the central three arches, each adorned with 'Gothic' canopies and capping at the first-floor height. The building is topped with a moulded corbel table and an embattled parapet.
To the right, there is a later extension (No 1), which is in a similar style and features three storeys. This extension has an embattled parapet with an end turret on the right side, three windows with chamfered surrounds and Gothic glazing. The centre window on the first floor is a shallow canted bay with a single central light and an embattled parapet. The ground floor of the extension has two arched windows and an arched doorway with a Gothic fanlight and a plain door, with buttresses extending to the first-floor level.
The Town Hall forms a group with the Drinking Fountain located in the centre of Market Place.
