Description

The National Westminster Bank, formerly known as No. 225 and previously occupied by the National Provincial Bank, is located on High Street in Lincoln. Built in 1883 by architect John Gibson, this building features a combination of ashlar and gault brick, topped with a hipped slate roof that has lead verges. The design is in the Italianate style and includes eight ridge stacks with dentilled cornices.

The building stands three storeys tall and has seven bays. The High Street facade showcases six plain windows with round heads and keystones. To the right, there is a moulded doorway with a tablet above inscribed "Smith's Bank," complemented by a shell tympanum. Above this entrance, there are seven plain sash windows with bracketed cornices, followed by seven smaller sashes with moulded architraves.

On the return front facing Mint Street, there is a five-bay version of the High Street facade to the left. To the right, there are brick ranges that rise to two and four storeys, maintaining a simplified version of the same architectural style.

Inside, the bank features a restored banking hall characterized by round-headed blind arches and four central Doric columns connected by round arches. The ceiling is adorned with a panelled cross beam plaster design.
