Description

The Midland Bank, located at No. 6 Guildhall Street in Lincoln, is a bank building constructed in 1848. The ground floor was remodeled in 1883 for the Lincoln & Lindsey Bank, and the building was extended between 1923 and 1926 by architects W & WG Watkins of Lincoln. The interior was refitted in 1989. The building is designed in the Renaissance Revival style and features a combination of ashlar and brick with stucco dressings, topped with plain tile and slate roofs.

The exterior showcases a vermiculated plinth, shaped quoins, a dentilled cornice at the first floor, a strapwork pseudo-balustrade, and shaped gables. It stands three storeys tall and consists of four bays with a square plan. The rounded north-east corner has a doorway flanked by Ionic piers and a cornice, with three margin light sash windows on each floor above. At the top, there is an octagonal corner tower with three round windows, topped by an ogee dome.

On the east side facing High Street, the building features two and three-light mullion and transom windows, along with rusticated Ionic pilasters. Above these are two and three-light margin pane sashes with Gibbs surrounds, and similar smaller windows above. There are also two crested gables dated 1924 and 1848. The north side, facing Guildhall Street, has a similar design with a doorcase to the right that includes a Gibbs surround, and above it, a round window with a keystone.

Inside, the bank fittings were renewed in 1989, but the interior retains late 19th-century Doric columns and a coved ceiling with an enriched cornice and strapwork.
