Description

No. 1 Eastgate is a plain house dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It stands five storeys tall and is constructed of brick. The building features chamfered quoins and has three windows on the upper floors, each with carved stucco lintels that include a keystone. The windows are hung sashes with glazing bars. There is a band at the first-floor window level. The ground floor has two windows, and there are two basement windows. A round-headed doorway with a keystone is set back in a rectangular stucco surround that is carved to resemble stone. Access to the door, which has six panels, is via five steps. There is a two-window return on Upgate. The house occupies an important position near the church and is part of a group with Nos 1 to 11A (odd).
