Description
No. 6 Upgate is a late 18th-century building located on the west side of Upgate, facing the Parish Church. It stands three storeys tall and is constructed of red brick. The front elevation features a dentil eaves cornice and includes four hung sash windows, although the two on the left are blocked. The doorway is adorned with pilasters and an open pediment, and it has a semi-circular fanlight with radiating details and panelled reveals. The door itself has six panels. There is a small early 19th-century shop window with plain pilasters. The road elevation has two windows, one of which is a blocked recess, and the other features marginal glazing. On the first floor, there is one blocked recess and a mid-19th-century canted bay window. A brick band separates the ground and first floors. The ground floor has a double early 20th-century shop front. The building occupies an important position next to the Parish Church, and Nos. 6 to 12 (even) are recognized as a group.
