Description
No 8 Upgate is an 18th-century brick house that stands three storeys tall with a semi-basement. It features a pantile roof and has five windows arranged in a 2-1-2 pattern. The second floor includes a semi-circular-headed window at the center, while the first floor has a modified Venetian window, which lacks an architrave and has blind side lights. The central windows are adorned with decorative 18th-century glazing in hexagonal shapes. The other windows on the first and second floors are hung sashes set in wide wooden cases, with plain reveals and segmental-arched heads, some retaining original glazing bars.
On the ground floor, there are two late 18th-century three-light bays with hung sashes featuring glazing bars and plain pilasters. String courses run between the storeys. The entrance is accessed by a flight of seven steps, which are equipped with iron handrails. The entrance has a wooden doorcase, deep reveals, and a panelled door beneath a blocked rectangular fanlight. There is also a basement window located below the bay on the right. This building is part of a group with Nos 6 to 12 (even).
