Description

Hagg Old Hall is a house dating from the mid-17th century, originally built for the Cheales family, with extensions and alterations made in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick and features a plain and fish scale slate roof from the 19th century, complete with a decorative ridge. There are red brick stacks on the single ridge and left gable, and the left gable shows tumbling. The eaves are dentil, and the gables are brick-coped with kneelers. A raised brick and dentil band runs along the first floor.

The house is designed in the Fen Artisan-Mannerist style and consists of two storeys with five bays. The central bay projects and is gabled, featuring a central doorway with a part-glazed door and overlight. Each side of this central bay has a single sash window. To the right, there are two larger sashes with lateral glazing bars, while to the left, there is a single cross casement and a single sash on the far left. The upper floor has four sash windows, with the second bay from the left having a single blind window. An ashlar shield is located in the gable apex of the central bay. All openings, including the blind window, have rusticated brick surrounds and lintels. The ground floor openings and the single central first-floor opening are topped with dentil pediments over the band, and the first-floor windows, apart from the single left one, have dentil brick sills. The gable walls also feature similar bands and pediments. At the rear, there is a similar 19th-century wing. Inside, the room to the right of the doorway has a four-centred arched brick fireplace.
